Experiment

This is a bit of a departure for me, style-wise. I've avoided longer skirts for a very long time for fear of looking stumpy and/or too earthmother-ish. But I really liked the cut of this skirt, at least on the hanger. (It has a bit of a trumpet flare on the bottom, which gives it nice movement.) I'm on the fence. Taking into account my crappy photography, were my initial instincts correct? Or is there a way to make this work? The leather jacket is also up for discussion; I haven't removed the tags on that either, yet.

Edited to add: I've decided this look just isn't the best for me, and both items are going back. Thanks to those who left feedback; I really appreciate your thoughts!

  1. I'm on the shorter skirt side - just above calf length as in the photo in a previous post with a tan flared number. I guess that is just how my eye is seeing lengths these days, though. If it feels good to you as is, go with it!

  2. Thanks, cherie!

I've actually only recently gotten back into skirts at all; and right below the knee seems to be the length I've been gravitating to. Right now I'm leaning toward returning both items.

  3. I *like* long skirts w/boots...but, hey, I'm in Alabama where fashion is pretty much something that's done in Other Places.

I kinda think if you're wanting to take it back after seeing it in the light of your own mirror and giving it a chance to play with what's already in the closet, you'll never really be happy with it.

    Agreed.

  5. I see you've already decided and, really, if you were hesitating, you'd always be convincing yourself internally and that's just too much work, so probably best to return items and move on.
For the record, though, I think this combination looks good on you -- the proportions work well and the skirt shows off your boots nicely as, obviously, pants won't do. You wear that rich caramel of the jacket well; it's a colour I love the idea and look of but can only handle with care.

  6. Actually those boots, which I purchased on sale at Nordstrom's a couple of years ago and which I absolutely love and hardly ever wear are one of my primary motivators for adding more skirts into the rotation. I think I'm going to look for a skirt with that nice movement but at right-below-the-knee length.

  7. I too recently found a pair of gorgeous knee-length boots (Cole Haan, suede, fabulous shade of forest green, about 75% off at Nordstrom Rack) that got me thinking about skirts. I've discovered some gems at PeruvianConnection.com, including--on sale--the Textural Godet Pima Cotton Jacquard Skirt, which at 28" is the right non-dowdy, non-earth-mothery length for me. I generally prefer brick-and-mortar stores where I can try clothes on, but this experiment turned out so well that I'd be willing to give PeruvianConnection another try. I'm currently pondering the 27" Herringbone Tweed Skirt (50% off).

  8. Thanks for the suggestion, Nancy. It's funny; I've received their catalogs but never really looked through them figuring they probably had alpaca ponchos and that sort of thing. But I'll definitely check them out now.

  9. Pseu, chiming in late to say I think you look great; but you certainly have to be comfortable. I too know the "I want to show off my tall boots!" feeling. I am starting to wonder about cropped pants, since I have banned skirts from my closet due to too many small kids to chase after. I know, at 5'4", I should heed your advice and step.away.from.the.gauchos. But I am seeing crops that aren't as full, e.g. garnethill.com, and I'm thinking, maybe, just maybe...
    Best luck spending your refund!

  10. I see you've taken them back but I liked the shape and colour of the jacket on you. Maybe in something other than leather? As for the skirt, go up about three inches and you'll still have a long skirt to wear with your boots but it won't be AS long.

  11. I'm nothing if not indecisive. I tried the jacket on again with some pants and jeans, and decided to keep it (LOVE the color).

In the meantime, I'm going to check out this skirt. The right length and it's got pocketses!
