The "Royal Riviera" pears are in at Harry & David. Unless you live in an orchard you've probably never tasted pears like these. Just picked up a couple of boxes at our local H&D, and enjoyed my first one of the season. Fabulous!!
(And before you go there, not all of us have farmer's markets nearby, at least not at times we can get to them regularly.)
oh, fresh pears -- I love them! love them sliced with a nice wedge of parmesan, love them plain to bite into, love them poached with a dollop of mascarpone and candied ginger, love them, love them!
ReplyDeletethat photo looks so pretty with the red berries for decoration.
I've never been much of a pear person, too grainy/mushy for me in general. However, that was before I discovered pears of quality. I had a rare date with my husband for the symphony a few weeks back, and in the interest of a quick meal, we went to Cardwells, where I had a honey-seared pear salad with greens and some fantastic dressing. It made the coffee plus brioche pudding with berries and white and dark chocolate decision quite easy, too, since I had been virtuous over the entree. Ah, but I forgot...the baked brie appetizer...nevermind. Yay pears!
ReplyDeleteI've found the texture depends somewhat upon the variety of the pear, and the degree of ripeness. If I may shill for just another moment, it's been my experience that if fully ripened, the H&D pears are not in the least bit grainy. To my mind, they have an almost buttery smoothness. And your mention of the pear salad has decided for me what we're having for dinner tomorrow night.
ReplyDeleteMoscarpone, coffee brioche pudding...dang you people know how to EAT! :-)
Oh yum, and yum again. Must remember to grab some pears on Saturday at the Farmer's Market. We like to make a meal of cheese, wine and bread at least once a week, and I always try to have some sort of perfectly ripened fruit (or chutney in a pinch) to compliment the cheeses.
ReplyDeleteann, us too! I made a salad the other night with organic baby greens, thinly sliced pear, and some Humbolt Fog cheese (lovely stinky soft cheese) and topped with homemade balsamic vinagrette dressing. Superb!
