One Classic, Hold the Stodgy!

Underneath this aspirationally-chic-and-stylish exterior, there sometimes beats a tweedy little heart with leather elbow patches. This time of year especially, I find myself drawn to ensembles that would make a 19th century English country gentleman proud.

Une femme was raised to believe in the values of hard work, of Schweppes tonic over Canada Dry and in the staying power of classic, tailored clothing. But if one isn't careful, the classic train can slip across the border into Frumpy County in no more time than it takes to figure out how to spell "Bouclé." But with a little thought and planning, one can avoid the Margaret Thatcher trap. The trick, I think, is to add one or two elements that are a little more trendy, edgy or vintage, or that somehow deviate from what is normally considered "classic," like dangly earrings, dark wash jeans or a standout bag.

Timeless, classic pieces are like the comfort food of a wardrobe. They may not be the most inspiring or creative or fashionable, but they can be a good foundation to build upon and something to return to that feels solid and grounded. Just remember to order an unconventional "salad" on the side.

If you're looking to add some classic elements to your closet, it just doesn't get much better than Talbot's for a good range of styles and sizes. Though some of their stuff appeals more to the cruise-and-shuffleboard set , they also offer some great career wear and well made, timeless pieces.

Can you picture yourself strolling through a New England autumn afternoon in some of these?
