Jury Duty

Une femme has been called to serve. With any luck, this will be a one-day deal. Yes, I know a trial by one's peers is the cornerstone of justice blah blah, but if you get empanelled, voir dire can take days, is mind-numbingly boring, and they always end up flicking me anyway.

  1. So far, surprisingly, I have avoided/evaded this call, except for one time when I had a newborn and was excused. (Now I have to go and knock on wood very quickly and very hard.) Hope your duty is quickly served and you're back judging fashion rather than your peers.

  2. But you're doing your duty as a citizen, and that is its own reward. :-)

  3. You could wear those bomb new shoes and pretend you're the star of a courtroom drama!

Grateful we live in countries with a highly developed and functional justice system.

  4. Are you on a jury adjudicating over fashion crimes? Uggs, Crocs and Juicy Couture sweats?

  5. materfamilias - well I've been empanelled (sp?) on a jury. I'll either be flicked tomorrow or there for a week...

phantomminuet - yes, it is rewarding in the end.

duchesse - yes as flawed as our judicial system can be, it's heartening to see regular people committed to doing their best, even if they've grumbled a bit about being there.

LBR - oh, I wish. Saw lots of fashion crimes perpetrated today (and filming/shooting for "Women's Murder Club" complete with Angie Harmon running down a flight of steps).

  6. I have the book "The Way We Wore" by Marsha Hunt, where there is a picture from one of her films from the 40s, of her playing the "bad girl" on the witness stand and she is wearing shoes with mink bows on the toes!! Unfortunately, as a member of the jury, you don't get to show off your shoes...
