I suppose it's inevitable. Being an Autumnophile, une femme has developed a sentimental fondness for kitschy fall themes. I'm irrationally charmed by accessories featuring pumpkins, colorful fall foliage, oak leaves and especially acorns.But tread carefully, mes petites. When it comes to acorn accessories (or anything with a seasonal theme), there's not a lot of real estate between "kitsch" and "nauseatingly hokey." I've found a few pieces that can claim residence on the right side of the tracks, or at least can be worn with a bit of insouciant irony.

ReplyDeleteNot sure where my comment went. But, I will try again. I love WendyB's necklace but it is a bit too big of a splurge for me. Since I cannot get the necklace I am going to get the J Crew gold acorn/squirrel charm bracelet you did not feature.

I can see that there isn't that much gold in the piece. Even with manufacturing costs, it couldn't possibly have a cost basis of over $1000.
Sorry to be so technical but even in the jewelry business this kind of a markup is outrageous.
My guess is that the price tag reflects the value that Wendy places on her art: the creativity, the development of the design, the workmanship. Frankly, I think most diamond jewelry is highly inflated as well, but ultimately it's a matter of what people will pay. If you think about it, the value of materials in a Basquiat painting is but a tiny fraction of what one will fetch at auction.

ReplyDeleteBelle de Ville, you're quite wrong. This is a sizable and heavy necklace. Between the weight of the gold -- and of course you know that gold has hit an all-time high this year -- and the many, many hours of hand labor (U.S.-based labor) that go into this piece, the cost to me was WELL over $1000. (The 28" chain alone costs more than $200.) The $6000 retail cost is exactly what I need to charge to make any money whatsoever. There's no special markup at all. In fact, I should be charging more.
