Halloween recap...

I didn't have a chance to carve my jack-o'-lanterns until yesterday afternoon, and so my designs are a bit "phoned in." But I think we had a record number of trick-or-treaters (probably between 350-400 based on how much candy we gave out) and notre fils really enjoyed his nocturnal sojourns and actually went up to some doors all by himself. We finally turned lights out a short while after 9pm.

  1. I´m really having mixed feelings about yesterday, October 31. It seems that Halloween has landed in Finland too, but I just can´t accept it to be on the same day as The All Saints´day we have here at the same time. Yesterday was a day/evening my hb and I went to the graveyard, where my grandparents and my parents have a grave. We had candles and placed them on the grave and the sight of the dark graveyard with hundreds of candles was really beautiful. So I really can´t change my mood at a snap to the jolly side, that Halloween represents. How about the holidays over there ? Your pumpkins are cute and I am so happy everything went well.

  2. Caraaazy! 350-400!! Here, we had 10 -- it's a small island with perhaps 40 school-age kids living on it, and we're up at an end that's slightly less productive to trick-or-treat. Every year, I buy enough candy for 50+ "just in case" and every year, we have leftovers (at least I'm always careful to be the chocolate bars I like best!)

  3. Cute pumpkins:). I can never count how many kids come, maybe 100-200? But some were so, so, cute. Glad your boy had a good time.

Love your pumpkins and carvings they look so cute and very magical ... in UK there is not such a big celebration of Halloween.... however, I always get in some sweeties etc. just in case (and because I lived in USA - (LA) years ago I do like to be prepared!) - however, NOT one trick or treater here which I was a bit sad about (and also my waistline will be too - toffee eclair leftovers anyone???!!!)

  7. We had maybe 125, always am touched by the excitement and slight shell-shocked faces of the smallest goblins. It's a sweet neghtbourhoomd evening. I admire your plentitude of pumpkins.

  8. Oh what darling pumpkins! I live in Australia, and halloween isn't so big, though wwe did manage to carve some pumpkins and watch some scary movies.

  9. metscan - I think the idea behind All Saints/Day of the Dead holidays is a beautiful tradition. Lagatta sent me a link to pictures of the Montmartre cemetary taken on All Saints, and I found them very moving.

    materfamilias - it's definitely an "event." When we finally blow out the candles and turn off the lights, we breathe a sigh of relief and collapse. Somehow DH always makes sure we have leftover candy... ;-)

    LPC - I love seeing the kids, especially the little ones who aren't sure about this whole trick-or-treat thing and just stare up at you with those big eyes while mom and dad are coaching "say trick or treat! say trick or treat!"

    Anoninoz - I find that taking the leftover candy in to the office does the trick!

    Sher - yes, our neighborhood is one of the "destinations" for trick-or-treating, as we have level, well-lit streets, neighbors who decorate like crazy, and a park/playground so the kiddies can burn off some of that sugar energy. They come in by the vanload!
