Do your neighbors go all out to decorate for the holidays?
I knew that Xmas decorating in the States is popular, but looking at your photos actually makes me sad. What we have around here, is SO modest. I won´t even start to compare it. For me less is so much more. I´ll try to take a picture of what we have/had ( if I´ll manage it) for you to see in my blog, that is starting in a very modest way!
Since I'm in an NYC apartment, none of my neighbors does anything interesting. The snowman is adorable.
Thank you Une Femme! They're fantastic - I think my favourites are the spinning snowmen. I too live in an apartment block and so the outdoor decorations are minimal, though we do have a Christmas tree with lights above the doorway - but nothing moves!
Brilliant - we are a bit tame here a few sparkly lights but that is it. Love the snowman.
metscan - my personal taste in holiday decorations runs to the more subtle and traditional, but one has to appreciate the enthusiasm here. WendyB - gotta love Frosty! That's Not My Age - happy to oblige. This is actually minimal compared to some neighborhoods, where they have professionals come in to set up their lights and decorations!Make Do Style - I must say I enjoy the cheerful lights and decorations. I'm always sorry to see them packed up and put away in January.
My neighborhood isn't one of those "fun" Christmas neighborhoods, but there are enough good sports to make it festive.
We're just down the block from the Mairie (town hall) for the 11th arrondisement, and they always do a good job with the lights (alas, no spinning snowmen). Apart from the few Santas scaling the outside of Haussmannien buildings (which I always find creepy), there's not much in the way of individual outdoor festive decor.Karen in Paris
My town's newspaper runs a contest for the best (schlockiest, garish) decorations, unfortunately I think that encourages some people. I too prefer the more subtle, traditional decorations. It used to be that most houses had some decorations, and that made the neighborhood look nice. Now, people seem to either go all out with tasteless decorations, or they do nothing at all.
We do have one neighbor that we've nicknamed "Mr. Griswold"...it seems like almost every square inch of his yard is covered with something. With the winds we had Christmas week, the display now looks rather sad.
