NYDJ Alina Legging (not leggings as I’m used to thinking of them)

I’ll confess, I’m a jean-aholic. I have several pair in rotation, and always feel most at home in jeans. My current favorites are these NYDJ Alina’s, which are stretchy, lightweight, cut nice and slim through the leg, but not so skinny that they look painted on. They have a medium rise, hitting just below the navel with no gaping in the back. I’m still quite sold on this brand for fit and range of styles, but will say that sizing can still sometimes be inconsistent between styles, so you have to try them on.

I know that current wisdom holds that bootcuts are most universally flattering, but I prefer slim or straight legs (and find them easier to wear with a variety of shoes), in a dark wash and without distressing or embellishment. Simpler, dark wash styles are also easier to dress up and paired with a jacket can easily navigate Monday through Thursday in many business casual workplaces.

There are so many denim trends right now: printed, colored, coated, cropped, selvage, flared, boyfriend, straight, slouchy, tuxedo style. What’s your favorite?

  1. I actually like Talbot’s jeans (the rare thing they do well anymore) and they have some terrific sales. The trouser looks polished for work, the straight leg is classic; their coloured denim comes in great shades. I also buy NYDJ but when I can get the Talbot’s for $45 or less on sale and NYJD costs a $100 more (here) and is never on sale, not a tough decision.

  2. I’m one of those bootcut sorts. However, I recently found the 1969 GAP original fits in selvedge denim, and they are fairly slim and straight but don’t make me look like a bowling pin:).

  3. For flat shoes, I like ankle length slim (not too slim), in a dark wash, black or color. I’m not fond of lighter wash jeans. I have one or two boot cuts, but I reserve them for—boots! Do you think there is an age when women should cease to wear jeans? I am curious as I approach 65.

  4. I have thrown convention out the window!! I find myself wearing denim most days now and loving the slim cut, skinny, legging look…even though all I read says I should stay away from it. Fashion in Texas has gone toward the more casual side even for work and there are so many fun jeans which help us look casual yet fashion forward!! Good selections!!

  5. I live in jeans ( although if it was sartorially legal, I’d live in pyjamas for the rest of my life). I love skinnies with boots and I like a straight/slim cut for everyday. I also wear the ripped/cuffed ones and try to ignore Mr Sulky’s grimaces.

  6. When did jeans become such a staple in our wardrobes? I love them, too, Femme. I have tried many brands, including NYDJ (so expensive) but have not yet declared my allegiance. Those jeans will be great for your trip to London. Very practical for day to day. You are looking so great! Have a great weekend.

  7. I am with you there.. Jeans are my staple everyday! And I love a straight style or a skinny. Your new fav pair look wonderful. S x

  8. I only wear jeans – black, different shades of blue, gray, and white. I wear J.Brand primarily and like the skinnies on me the most. I also have their “boyfriend” style, but their leg is slimmer than most BFs. And those I cuff. In LA – it’s really all I need, unless I’m going to a wedding or something like that.

  9. Classic skinny for me too. I only own 2 pairs of jeans, both several years old, yet used nearly daily! I don´t like dark denim.

  10. I wear ankle length straight-legged like Kristien. I have become very fond of my Jones New York orange jeans.
When I am around home or running errands, I wear inexpensive jeans by a Canadian company called Reitman’s. They are like my jeans-sweats.

  11. Oh, gosh–I have a hard time with jeans. Lately I’ve discovered a brand I like a lot–JAG. You can find them in specialty shops and on Zappos. They have a mock zipper and they pull on but don’t look frumpy. I like a trouser style.
