10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.10

"Stuff Parisians Like" by Olivier Magny

If you are familiar with the blog Stuff Parisians Like, you'll find this book an amusing expansion of the themes there. And if you haven't checked out the blog yet, it will be a delightful discovery. Olivier writes about the social habits of his fellow Parisiens with a uniquely French blend of derision and affection.

On our last Paris visit, we had the pleasure of meeting M. Magny at his wine bar in the heart of Paris, Ô Chateau. Is he not handsome?
No, I didn't take this one. From gqmagazine.fr
(He's just as charming as he looks, bien sur.)

If you'd like to be entered to win the book* please leave a comment below.  Many thanks to all of you who have entered over the last few days, and congratulations to those whose names were drawn.

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.9

Bare Minerals "quick change" brush cleaner
I use brushes almost exclusively to apply le maquillage, and try to be diligent about giving them a good gentle shampoo every few weeks. But sometimes I want to switch colors in between washings or don't have time to wash and let air dry, so this brush cleaner is always on hand. Spray a couple of pumps onto a paper towel, then rub the brush gently on the damp surface. (You'll be *amazed* at how much product your brushes hang on to!)

If you'd like to be entered to win this cadeau, please leave a comment below.  Winner will be announced tomorrow.  And to recap...

It's perfect alone for day, or you can change up with look by wearing with different lip liners (fill in the lip with liner/pencil, then apply this on top). Just the thing for Spring!

To enter to win, please leave a comment below. Winner will be announced tomorrow.

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.7

Shiseido blotting papers

Rudolph isn't the only critter with a Very Shiny Nose. Thanks to what's euphemistically referred to as "combination skin," my cheeks can be as dry as the Mohave, while the lipid gleam from my nose could warn ships off a rocky shore on a foggy night.

I tried various powders and powder foundations, but they either didn't work for long or, worse, left my face looking like a powdered donut. I think the first recommendation I saw for these Shiseido blotting papers may have come from Tabitha at Bourbon & Pearls. At any rate, I am never without them now.  They tackle the shine but leave any makeup intact, and without leaving a visible powdery residue. (Non-makeup- wearers will also love these.) The packaging is compact and purse-friendly, so you can keep on hand for touch-ups mid-day at the office or for that New Year's Eve party that shows no sign of ending at midnight.

If you'd like to be entered to win, please leave a comment below. (Program note: drawing for winner for this cadeau may be an hour or so later than normal due to scheduling anomalies tomorrow.)

Bonne chance!

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.6

Workshop Cosmetics Cheeky Blush in "Blooming"

This creme blush from Workshop Cosmetics by Makeover Workshop is, according to Brian, a customer favorite that works on many skin tones. It looks quite bright in the container, but the pink color melts into skin to provide a soft, warm, natural looking flush. I'm dying to try it myself, but this one's for one of you!

To enter to win, please leave a comment.  Entries close 24 hours from initial posting.

And the winner is...
Norma!! Norma, please email me at unefemmecertainage (at) gmail (dot) com with your address, thanks. Congratulations!

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.5

I met the very lovely Corine Gantz, author of Hidden In Paris, a few months ago at a party. After speaking with her, I knew right away I'd want to read this book, and check out her blog, Hidden In France. I picked up the book a few weeks ago, but only recently had time to begin reading it. Two chapters in and I'm hooked! Paris, a woman on a journey of self-discovery, some intriguing characters, and...Paris! What's not to love??

If you'd like to win a copy of Hidden In Paris, that Corine has kindly offered to sign, please enter a comment.  Winner to be announced tomorrow.

Here's the 10 Days Of Chrismukkah Winners Circle (so far):

Merry Christmas!

I just wanted to take a moment to wish a Very Merry Christmas to those of you who are celebrating. I hope your Christmas is warm and wonderful and surrounded by loved ones.

And I wanted to thank all of you who read Une femme d'un certain âge, and who comment and email me. It's been so fabulous getting to know you, some in person. It's like Christmas every day of the year!

Wishing you all blessings of the season.

10 Days of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.4

Clinique City Block Sheer
I use this as an everyday facial sunscreen. It works beautifully under makeup, or can be used alone to even out skin tone as well as provide 25 SPF protection. It's lightly tinted, but blends in beautifully. This particular formula has no irritating chemicals, which makes it great for sensitive skin. For intense or prolonged sun exposure, you'd probably want a higher SPF but otherwise this provides good protection.

Just a review of the giveaway guidelines:

  • First thing each morning, I'll post the petit cadeau du jour. If you'd like to be entered to win that particular item, enter a short comment on that post. One entry per person, s'il vous plait, and please only leave a comment if you wish to be entered for that particular item. (Duplicate comments will be deleted to keep odds even.)
  • Entries will close exactly 24 hours later. At some point after that, I'll use the random number generator to select a winner, and announce within a few hours, in the body of the original post.
  • To be eligible to win, you must be a Google follower (one of les amis in the sidebar at right).
  • If you are selected as the winner, please email me with your mailing address.
  • Les cadeaux will be shipped out to winners right after New Year's (again, in the name of une femme's sanity). If you live in the US, it will be sent via UPS ground. Winners outside the US will be at the mercy of the postal service. ;-)

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.3

Bonjour, Happiness! by Jamie Cat Callan
I dare you to read this book and not be smiling after the first few pages. It's a delightful read, and a fun reminder that happiness, rather than being something "out there" that must be pursued, can so often be found by slowing down, paying attention, taking pleasure what surrounds us, and making the quotidien something special.

If you'd like to win a copy of this book*, please leave a comment.  Winner will be announced in this post tomorrow.

(To review giveaway guildelines, go here.)

And the winner is...

Northmoon!  Please drop me an email with your mailing address, and Congratulations!

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.2

Workshop Cosmetics from Makeover Workshop, brow pencil in "Blondi"
Your brows are like a picture frame for your eyes, and if your brows are sparse or uneven, filling in with a brow pencil will not only make them more defined but also draw attention to those gorgeous peepers. I love this creamy pencil from Workshop Cosmetics; it goes on very soft (none of that I-drew-my-eyebrows-on-with-a-Sharpie-and-a-stencil look), stays put all day, and never requires a separate sharpener. The handy brush grooms and smooths. This color, Blondi, will work for almost all brow shades.

If you'd like to be entered to win this fabulous brow pencil, please leave a comment.  Winner will be announced tomorrow.

More fun cadeaux still in the queue!

And the winner is....Melina (who also included a wonderful quote from Shakespeare)!  Melina, please email me at unfemmecertainage (at) gmail (dot) com with your mailing address, thanks.

10 Days Of Chrismukkah: Cadeau No.1

shu uemura eyelash curler
When I first began curling my eyelashes a few years ago, I couldn't believe what a difference it made.  Even if you don't wear makeup, curling your lashes makes the eyes look more wide open and awake. I really like this particular curler, and was dismayed to find out late last year that shu uemura was no longer selling their products in U.S. stores; however they are available online.

So...here's one for one of you!  If you'd like to win, please post a short comment, and please don't add a comment here if you're not interested in this particular cadeau (there will be more). Winner will be announced tomorrow.

Seasonal Anticipation

Well yes, there are some big holidays on the horizon, but une femme is actually counting down the days until...

Season 2 of Downton Abbey!

Our local station has begun re-running episodes from Season 1 which I'm enjoying even more this time.

The elegant costumes!

The quaint country customs!

The Dowager!

Here in the U.S., Season 2 premieres January 8.

Holiday Cheer

Christmas, Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, New Year's...whatever you celebrate I wish you a joyous holiday season. Though our own holiday observances will be rather low-key this year, I still love seeing all of the festive decorations and lights, and am vicariously enjoying everyone's anticipation of their own celebrations.

I've been thinking for a while that I want to do something to thank those of you who have hung in with une femme through the last few months of irregular posting and sporadic responses to your lovely comments. While sending each and every one of you a little gift would be my first choice, I'm going do to the next best thing: a holiday giveaway!

I'm calling it The 10 Days of Chrismukkah. (A happy medium between the Twelve Days of Christmas, and the Eight Crazy Nights of Hanukkah.)  Each day for 10 days beginning December 21st, I'll be giving away one of my favorite and/or previously recommended products to one of you!

While I won't be checking to see who's been naughty or nice (and honestly, I hope you've been a little of both!) I will have to set up some parameters to preserve my sanity.  So here's how it's going to work:
  • First thing each morning, beginning next Wednesday, I'll post the petit cadeau du jour. If you'd like to be entered to win that particular item, enter a short comment on that post. One entry per person, s'il vous plait, and please only leave a comment if you wish to be entered for that particular item.
Winners outside the US will be at the mercy of the postal service. ;-)
  • In order to spread the joy as far as possible, I'll be limiting each winner to one item. Once you know you've won something, I'll kindly ask that you refrain from entering on subsequent days.
  • I'm not Oprah, so no cars will be given away.
So please stay tuned, and I hope this will be as fun for you as it has been for me to plan it!

Musical Interlude

Rubiatonta mentioned Julie London's version of "Mad About The Boy"in comments on last week's post of the same name. I couldn't find that particular version on YouTube, but did find Marianne Faithful's inimitable rendition, above. Enjoy!

"Phone It In" Holiday Gifts

I'll admit it; we're phoning in the holidays this year. But even when we are more invested in seasonal celebrations, we always keep a few wrapped "just in case" gifts handy for those people we either inadvertently left off our gift lists, or who might drop in unexpectedly. It's almost easier to select personalized gifts than find something that will appeal to a wider contingent of various denominations and demographics, but over the years we've come up with some tried-and-true favorites.

A nice box of chocolates. Around here, See's Assorted Chocolates are always a hit.

Scented candles. Small diptyques, or a selection of votives from Pier 1 or a favorite local boutique, in a gift basket with two or three simple votive holders.  Or a pair of beeswax tapers, for those whom you suspect may actually own a pair of candlesticks.

Some nice milled soaps. L'Occitaine has some nice options, or again, something handcrafted from a local boutique or artisan always adds a personal touch, and supports a local business.

A bottle of dessert wine. Just a notch more festive than your average Merlot or Chardonnay.

What are your favorite "on hand" holiday gifts?

Room With A View

(Empty) pool view from our room at the Venetian. All photos taken with iPhone. I packed the point-and-click camera but was too lazy to pull it out.
We're meeting an old and dear friend for brunch in a couple of hours, then heading home. I've never been a "Vegas person." But le monsieur is, or was, more back in the days of cheap lobster buffets, $5 blackjack tables and such. No high rollers here. I've learned to enjoy bits of it. But every couple of years we succumb to the low season deals and come over for two days of total unreality. There is a lot of Over The Top Pretty:

More pretty holiday decorating at the Wynn
The conservatory at the Bellagio always does some spectacular seasonal displays with flowers and plants.

I still say it looks like a gigantic blow dryer. (Actually a bar/restaurant inside.)  City Center Mall.

More City Center Mall, tubes filled with water, whirlpools and colored lights.

I snapped this one for Style Crone, fantastical hat store in the Venetian shops.
I usually enjoy Las Vegas for about the first 24 hours or so. I can allow myself to be immersed in the other-worldliness of some of it, the great shopping (even the "mall stores" here seem to be better stocked with colors and sizes than at home), and and we often have some really great meals. But soon, the excess, the ersatz, the carbon footprint the size of Siberia starts to wear on me, and then I'm ready to go home. Le monsieur and I have also come to recognize that we just can't eat and drink the way we used to, so a lot of what people come to Las Vegas for is lost on us.

Our idea of Wretched Excess
À bientot! Hope your weekend was/is a good one.

Mad About The Boy, And Assorted Tidbits

Maquillage

There's a new Boy in my life, Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in "Boy." Armed with my new Light Summer palette and a list of color recommendations, I hit the mall on my lunch hour to try out some fresh maquillage. I'd read all the hype about this color last spring but had passed it by, thinking it would be too pink pour moi, but it's really pretty on. I love the sheer formula of Rouge Coco Shine; if you're a bit lipstick-averse but feel that you need a little color and aren't crazy about glosses, I recommend you give these a try.

Les Voyages

Le monsieur and I are running away this weekend for some much needed R&R. Destination to be revealed...

But don't worry, petit monsieur et les chiens *will* have adult supervision and will be in good hands.

À bientot et bon weekend!

Walking The Line

Personal style has often felt to une femme like more of a balancing act than anything. We have to find and walk that fine line between too dressy and too casual, too conservative and too trendy, too loose and too tight, too somber and too bright, too "done" and too "laissez-faire," among other considerations. And the line shifts with our life circumstances, geography, budget, and philosophy.

But the line that seems to demand increased attention, especially as applied to les femmes d'un certain age is that line between "trying too hard" and "letting oneself go." Crossing this line in either direction garners sharp cultural disdain. It's about more than appearance; it's also about enforcing cultural norms and behaviors. That said, we still have to live work and function within our own cultures, workplaces, communities, and while I'm not advocating mindless conformity, most of us who are interested in style as personal expression want our message to be understood.

Last week Lisa at Privilege wrote a beautiful post (but her posts are always beautiful) about, in part, walking that line, as manifested by her long grey hair and flare leg jeans. I love what she says here,

One could also, however interpret “letting oneself go,” to mean letting oneself go – forward.

That right there, that's the crux of it, that true north to help us find and walk that line between "letting oneself go" and "trying too hard." Is our style moving forward with us? Because life doesn't go backward. Trying to dress to recapture who we were in the past, that's where we tend to veer into "trying too hard" territory. (My own style journey has been sidetracked at times by nostalgia, wanting to recreate an adult elegance as perceived through a child's eyes.)  Are we dressing, wearing our hair, making choices based on who we are and how we live our lives today, and moving into the future?

I've always asserted that my goal isn't to look *young* but rather to look *current.* I'm fine with looking my age; I just want to look vital, engaged, vibrant, my best self at whatever age. That doesn't mean following every trend, but rather selectively incorporating those larger shifts in style that seem to occur every few years, while at the same time retaining the roots of what make my style my own. So sometimes a trend piques my interest, and I'm willing to give it a try if I believe it might jibe with my taste and style. As Lisa said, "I'm the boss of what 55 means." We're all the boss of what our age means. But you can't be the boss of 55 or 65 or 75 if you're trying to pretend you're 25.

We can't continue to hone our own style by trying to be someone else, or trying to be someone we once were. I say, embrace your age, be the boss of it and dress for it, whatever that means to you.

Dress-N-Boots!

Dress-N-Boots is rapidly becoming something of a workday uniform. How did I live for so many years without a single dress in my wardrobe??  The top two dresses are from Karina Dresses, both are "Megan" style. I really love these dresses. You can't beat them for comfort, ease and flattery. If you haven't perused the online shop recently, they've recently added a lot more styles and fabrics! And don't forget to use discount code FEMM30 for $30 off any full-priced dress.
Realized as I was editing photos that my glasses were crooked, which makes me look demented. Note to self: check photos more closely before putting the camera away.

I bought a new remote for the camera this weekend, when the first cheapie one stopped working after less than two weeks. New one is smaller, but much more persnickety. By the time I took this picture, I was getting rather frustrated trying to get it pointed at the right angle to get the shutter to fire.

This sweater dress and leggings are from Eileen Fisher. Dress here. Scarf is from J.Crew, last year. I was hoping they'd offer this style again this year so I could pick up in another color, but no luck.

And speaking of color...

On Saturday I took the plunge and had a Personal Color Analysis done by a SciArt trained consultant, Julia Dupps of Wish Wardrobe Consulting. I've been trying to incorporate more color into my wardrobe, but kept feeling that the colors I was choosing were missing the mark. The PCA is a two hour process. You're seated in front of a mirror with two full-spectrum lights, and wear a grey drape and shower cap to eliminate the color influence from clothing and hair. This is all about the impact of colors on skin and face. Through a process of elimination she compares the effect of various color drapes on the skin. What was amazing to see is how certain colors can make one look splotchy and tired or conversely smooth, creamy and vibrant. I was shocked to see that the warm, yellow-based colors I've been wearing are NOT the best for me, after decades of believing that my skin tone is warm (peach, which I've always thought was one of my "best" colors, turned me orange and emphasized my brown discolorations). Turns out my coloring is neutral to slightly cool, though there are some warm influences. My "season" in the SciArt system is Light Summer, and I'm delighted with the colors in this palette...lots of greens and blues, a soft merlot, a few purples and pinks. So look for more color in coming months. Some good news: many of the taupe and lighter grey neutrals I've been accumulating the last couple of years are right in my palette, so my wardrobe foundation is still wearable with my new colors. What's also interesting, is that a couple of pieces I'd bought recently despite believing they "weren't my colors," turned out to be spot-on with colors in my new Light Summer palette! I feel as though I'm seeing everything with new eyes, and am really looking forward to incorporating and wearing these fresh colors.

Check out the rest of Visible Monday over at Not Dead Yet Style!
