Show Us The Brooches!

Talbot’s brooch from 4? 5? years ago

Chanel “Paris” brooch. Unknown origin martini brooch

Today, bloggers and readers of Une femme d’un certain âge are sharing their favorite brooches and pins!  If you’ve included your favorites in a blog post, please link up below. A few readers sent me some photos of their lovely and special brooches.

From Deborah:

This bird was given to me by a Finnish friend when my daughter finished her leukemia treatments. It is a Finnish symbol/bird with a name I cannot recall nor pronounce. But my daughter’s nickname is J-bird. Hence the significance of wearing a bird close to my heart.

Jill Ann sent in pictures of several of her favorite brooches.

This one belonged to my dear granny, Florence, and is one of my very favorites.

This one was my favorite as a child. Granny had a small “treasure chest” in her dresser, with all her sparkly costume jewelry in it. When I was at her house, I loved to take out all the pieces and play with them. The treasure chest is now mine, and is truly cherished.

Another favorite from Granny, although missing some stones. I wear this during the holidays, because of the color.

A contemporary entry:  got these at Talbots a few years ago. A cute twist on the “Christmas brooch” category.

And this gorgeous piece is from Yvonne in Paris:
This crystal peacock brooch is not antique, but I saw it online and had to have it. Only thing is, I must have had my head in centimeter mode when I ordered it, or perhaps the almost Five Inch length listed might have given me pause! Let’s just say it’s a statement piece, and one that I bet will be quite the conversation starter at holiday parties.

These next two were sent by Anna:

Two brooches inherited from my mum.  She bought the sterling ship ONI in Norway in1962, on our family trip when I was 10.  The other one is also sterling by Danecraft. It looks like a shield. Good reminders of my Viking heritage.
Vintage carnival glass – a gift from my husband’s eldest daughter.  Blue is my favourite colour.

  1. I recall seeing those Finnish bird brooches several years ago. It´s lovely, and the story that goes with it warms my heart.

I have never participated in this kind of blogger meetup before, very great fun, thank you!

  2. I so love the bird, the ship, the peacock, and everyone’s marvellous treasures. Thank you so much for hosting this round-up, Susan!

  3. The Finnish brooch is a “Bird of Hattula” (Hattulan lintu) brooch produced by Kalevala Koru a Finnish manufacturer of wonderful bronze silver and gold jewerly, here is what I found on their web site on the meaning of this symobol:The northern peoples had a special relationship with waterfowl, which symbolised fertility. For the population of the north, the return of birds in the spring signified summer, the start of a new year. When the waterfowl returned, people knew that nature was emerging from its winter sleep. Waterfowl featured the magic of fertility.

  4. I ´ve said it before, but once more: I do like brooches, if they please my eye, so much better than a hanging something.
Being a Finn, I should like Kalevala Koru´s jewelry and the one shown, is nice, but as I have seen them around all my life, they don´t look very special in general. I do appreciate the story behind the bird brooch, which naturally makes it extra special for the owner.

  5. Hi there, oh boy do I love a brooch! Earlier this year I ran a style challenge on my blog to see if we could all wear at least one brooch for 7 days straight. It was such a fun way to dust off all of those fab brooches that’s been hiding away for far too long. Here’s the link to that – you should try it! http://www.foxinflats.com.au/2012/05/style-dare-pin-up-brooches/

And in the linky I added a post that I then created using some of the images for the week. Hope you like it x Andrea

  6. What a fun bunch of brooches! I’m inspired now to wear the few I have, and maybe buy some more.

Are we voting? I go for the martini!

  7. This is a really fun link up and I look forward to checking out everyone’s brooch bling. Thank you for hosting! I adore the Paris pin and the butterfly.

    Sue xo

  8. What a feast! I don’t have brooches – no, okay, I have two maybe, but nothing spectacular enough to share. These pieces are incredibly inspiring. Great idea.

  9. I’m dusting my brooches off plus my mother’s and grandmother’s. I like when they are cleverly grouped together. I recently bought a few to assemble as necklaces. It’s so interesting how many bloggers have posted on this subject. Happy pinning!!
