Kickin’ it New School – Boyfriend Jeans
Materfamilias shows how it’s done for nous femmes d’un certain age. The soft bohemian scarf, interesting cuff and leopard shoes keep the overall look light, simple and laid-back. Leave the extreme distressing/ripping to the kids (and personally, I think that’s a rather affected look even on younger women).
Here are some options that look ageless and workable, all at a lower price point. If the fabric is stiff however, move on. This look requires soft fabric with a bit of drape. (Click on pictures for prices and more info.)
Ralph Lauren
Banana Republic
Chico’s (?!?)
DKNY
Current/Elliot, on sale at Nordstrom’s right now

If it ever, ever gets below 10degrees here againº (and I’m beginning to despair of that), I’ll look forward to pulling out my Lucky Brand boy-jeans and slouching around in them.
I’m so tickled, Pseu, I feel like going all Sally Field on you (You like me, you really like me . . . )
StyleSpy: I’m not sure how comfy these would be in your temps, but I have to say that the looser fit and lighter (worn) fabric means that I have worn mine in the high 20s, low 30s temps we’ve been having here on Vancouver Island (off Canada’s West Coast) — that’s 80s and 90s-ish for you Southerners. They’re obviously not as cool as a floaty, sleeveless silk dress, but they’re tolerable.
Really like this look on women with shapely ankles. (That leaves me out.(
As with all styles it’s a matter of knowing what shows your loveliest features.
Hey! She looks better than the models. Go us certain agers!
I have not tried that yet. I’m thinking it’s a straight cut jean. Boot cut would not stay rolled up right?
But I’m so relieved that a looser cut jean is in style. I’m tired of tight….
Loving this look. Miss J has bona fide BF jeans… she bought a pair a jeans for Mr. J, they didn’t fit, so guess who’s wearin’ them now??? She’ll have to remember this next holiday season.
Ralph Lauren is the only brand I know of these, and it is trustworthy. The sizing is a mystery, that´s what makes online shopping so difficult. I do like jeans and the cuffing, but I´d cuff mine a bit more.
have to say I’n not loving this trend – still find it not particularly flattering.
Yay! You know I’ve been loving this look a LONG time!
I saw the first pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans that tempted me just yesterday in the Sundance catalog. They were Joe’s, so EXPENSIVE … but super cute.
Sher – I think a straight leg pant would work best, also would avoid having too much volume in the cuff.
Style Spy – and you’ll post a pic to show us how you style them, yes?
materfamilias – I was so impressed with how these looked on you it inspired me to try some. Will let you know how they work.
Duchesse – Hmm, this might work for me then…I’ve always had small ankles (except when I was preggers and they swelled to the size of basketballs).
metscan – I’ve ordered a pair of the Ralph Laurens, and will let you know how they run.
WendyB – I have not forgotten how you told us we would ALL be wearing these soon, and you may yet be right!
LPC – she DOES really wear this well, doesn’t she?
Sal – I haven’t had much luck with the fit of the premium brands, but I’m going to give the Current/Elliot’s a try.
La Belette – you and me both on those shoes…yummy!
Miss Janey – Mr. Pseu is a stringbean, so I’d imagine his jeans would be a bit too narrow in the hips for me. But how cool you’ve got the real deal!
Imogen – I think this is one of those styles that if it speaks to you, flattery takes a back seat. Though I do think they look great on Materfamilias.
I do love the look on Mater. I may try it and see if I can pull it off.
A side point: LOVE the shoes with the Ralph Lauren jeans. Gorgeous!
I think I could wear those Banana Republic ones … Shame we can’t get them here!
I’m with Imogen; this trend leaves me cold. Unless you actually have a boyish frame, it is less than flattering. Rolled-up jeans belong to the ‘tween set and revivals of Grease.
I’m really liking the trend, I wrote a piece on my own blog here too: http://www.fashionoa.com/designer/aw-09-trends-06-the-boyfriend-jeans
Noa Xx
Nope, ‘fraid I have to pass on this one. For one my legs are short enough as it is; also, my ankles aren’t my best feature. For me rolled up jeans somehow feels ‘hillbilly’, but to each their own!
